Southern Oregon Historical Society
106 North Central
"The Southern Oregon Historical Society was formally organized in 1946 by a group of Jackson County residents interested in saving the 1883 Jackson County Courthouse and preserving the legacy of the early settlers. The Society's hope was to gather local historical materials and preserve historical objects, buildings and sites. From these early beginnings, the Society has grown into one of the finest regional historical societies in the Pacific Northwest.
Today, the Society administers:
- two museums
- a 30,000 square foot history center with a research library
- an 11,000 square foot collections storage building
- 5 historic structures in Jacksonville
- Michael Hanley farmstead, a 37 acre Century Farm located a short distance from Jacksonville
The Society strives to generate an appreciation of regional history for present and future generations by presenting public programs relating to history and archaeology and is a leader in statewide and national historic education programming."
